THE GRIDDLE STONE

In the town land of Towntruffaun there is a splendid specimen of a Dolmen. The table stone is at one end about 11 feet 6 inches by about a foot in width, while the slab varies in thickness from 1 foot 9 inches to 2 foot 9 inches. It is believed that the stone is standing there for 5,000 years. The type of stone is granite, the land around the dolmen was owned by the late John Leonard. It was a hiding place for the IRA around the time of the Culleens Ambush.

Stories about "The Griddle Stone":

One day there was a strong man trying to lift the stone and it fell on him and crushed him.

There is also supposed to be a giant or a king buried there.

Another story is that two giants were throwing stones and they landed on each other, which formed the Dolmen.

Some old myths about the stone:

If you touch the Dolmen you will be cursed.

A long time ago when someone died they would be cremated and their ashes would be scattered around the stone.

There is also supposed to be a straight line of dolmens from here to Stone Hinge in England.
