Inishmurray
is Sligo's most renowned Atlantic Island. This island
was home to a small but happy community which finally
left in 1948. The desertion of the island was in the
modern trend of island to mainland, mainland to town,
town to city. Access to the island is nowadays, usually,
from either Mullaghmore or Aughris Pier. This journey
is about fourteen miles and takes about seventy minutes
each way and is weather dependent.
One
needs about six hours on this island to view the evidence
of an early Monastic site which includes beehive cells,
the well of St. Molaise and the legendary cursing
stones. The island was used chiefly as Templeboys'
burial ground. It was customary for four men to take
the corpse in a boat to the island to bury it. This
continued down the ages until a certain crossing,
the boat overturned and all of its occupants were
drowned. From that time on it ceased to be the burial
ground of Templeboy.
