Aughris Priory
A religious house called "Aghoris" was said to have been founded by St. Molaise of Inishmurray in the year 571 and a house of the Augustinian Canons was said to have been founded in 1280. The second is presumably a rebuilding of the house when it took the Augustinian Rule. The Priory at Aughris was a castellated Priory, like those in Wexford and Waterford, which showed the disturbed state of the times, when it served the purposes of war.
Inishmurray Island

Inishmurray is Sligo's most renowned Atlantic Island. This island was home to a small but happy community which finally left in 1948. The desertion of the island was in the modern trend of island to mainland, mainland to town, town to city. Access to the island is nowadays, usually, from either Mullaghmore or Aughris Pier. This journey is about fourteen miles and takes about seventy minutes each way and is weather dependent.

One needs about six hours on this island to view the evidence of an early Monastic site which includes beehive cells, the well of St. Molaise and the legendary cursing stones. The island was used chiefly as Templeboys' burial ground. It was customary for four men to take the corpse in a boat to the island to bury it. This continued down the ages until a certain crossing, the boat overturned and all of its occupants were drowned. From that time on it ceased to be the burial ground of Templeboy.
